FAQ

Absolutely! As long as you don’t use the grant funds to pay for a grant writer. In this case you will use unrestricted funds.

Yes, it’s perfectly legal. As long as you use unrestricted funds that are not associated with the applicable grant.

Unrestricted funds are financial resources without specific conditions or limitations on how they can be used.

Grants - Most grants come with specific stipulations regarding their use. However, this is not always the case. There are grants available that allow for funds or partial funds to be used on Grant Writers or Fundraising Managers.

Donations - Similar to grants, donations can be classed as both restricted and unrestricted funds. If a doner places specific instructions on how their donation can be used such as for a particular project then this donation is classed as restricted. To ensure donations are classified correctly, it’s important to communicate clearly with donors about how their contributions will be used as unrestricted donations allows the organisation to allocate the funds where they are most needed.

Revenue - If your not-for-profit business or charity generates revenue then your organisation can allocate those funds where appropriate.

Personal funds - If you’re just getting started with your CIC you may not have a stable revenue stream or donations. In which case you may consider an investment from yourself. For example, If we apply for a grant with the value of £10,000 then GrantGrow would charge £2,000, you have the option to use £2,000 of your own money to pay GrantGrow in order to use the full £10,000 on your project or to pay yourself wages.

Ruby is the director of a CIC called ‘Feel Fabulous Coffee’, a local community café. Ruby and GrantGrow have just been successful in their application of £10,000 from the National Lottery Awards for All fund who specifically state they cannot fund paying someone else to write your application for you. The key part of that statement is ‘cannot fund’, it’s perfectly okay to have someone write your application for you if you are paying them with unrestricted funds. Therefore the full £10,000 will go to Ruby’s project, she can then pay GrantGrow with the money she generates from the cafe selling food and drinks. It’s best to think of the grant and GrantGrow’s fee as unrelated, see diagram below.

Yes, In fact it’s encouraged. The more effort your organisation puts into funding opportunities the more likely you are to succeed.

GrantGrow always encourages new organisations to apply for grants themselves first. It’s valuable to understand the process of grant applications and who knows? You may be a natural.
